I have enhanced my skills professionally and personally with Focus Forward. The youth open up to you and share their life’s story and experiences, each with unique challenges and strengths. I learned that they have the potential to make their better choices; they just need a little push. They appreciate the work we do with them. It has been a great experience working with incarcerated youth and to know that they are doing better after they are released from custody.
There are several aspects of my skills that I need to develop to become a better mentor, person and professional. However, comparing from when I first starting to now, I see how my skills have improved. The activities I do with my youth during our sessions impact them positively. More than one youth have told me that they identify me as one or the only support system they have outside of their family. One youth told me “You are really trying to help me. You’re not like the other people.”
Mentoring with Focus Forward is a great learning experience. As a mentor, you will learn more about yourself and about your youth. You will gain valuable skills that will help you in your personal and professional life.
